The annual Reading Between the Wines fundraiser for Literacy Connections will take place this year on Saturday, October 19, from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at 103 South George Street. North Carolina literary greats, local gourmet food, craft beer and fine wines are combined to create a memorable evening among friends. This year we welcome accomplished columnist, author and host of UNC-TV’s “North Carolina Bookwatch,” D.G. Martin. Author of North Carolina’s Roadside Eateries, D.G Martin transforms into your personal tour guide to more than 100 notable local roadway haunts that serve not only as places to eat but also as fixtures of their communities. Years spent on the major roadways of North Carolina, Martin has explored and gathered local history, and, of course, enjoyed and shared good home-cooked meals. Guests will also be treated to the historic Frank K. Borden home near beautiful downtown Goldsboro. Built in 1883, this elegant home contains Italiante influences with a polychrome slate roof. The exterior is painted in the original colors of Downing Straw, Rookwood Green, and Indian red. The downstairs interior has been largely restored using reproduction Victorian wallpapers. The current homeowners, Jewel and Randy Sauls, purchased this elegant structure in 2000. Reading Between the Wines is the primary fundraiser for Literacy Connections of Wayne County. Tickets are $60.00 and can be purchased online through the Literacy Connections website: https://www.literacyconnectionsofwaynecounty.org/reading-between-the-wines. Thank you to our returning partner in literacy, Wayne UNC Health Care, for their continued support. Money raised from this event goes to help this non-profit agency improve adult literacy in our area. Literacy Connections has a vision of a literacy rich community that benefits every resident of Wayne County. Serving adult learners and their families, each year, who require one-on-one tutoring to establish their basic reading, math, technology, and finance skills. In addition, Literacy Connections partners with other community programs to help adults reach their goals and fill a gap in the County's work force development efforts. Community volunteers share their knowledge and help guide adult learners toward their goals, whether those goals are large or small. To get tickets, or to find out more, you can contact Literacy Connections on Monday and Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. at 919-735-1990.
