Dr. Thomas A. Kunkel to Speak at MOC's Annual Martin Lecture
MOUNT OLIVE - Dr. Thomas A. Kunkel will be the guest lecturer at Mount Olive College's 17th Annual Lorelle F. Martin Lecture on Wednesday, February 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Southern Bank Auditorium. The theme for the lecture is "Exploring Inner Space: The World’s Smallest Word Processor.” The event, sponsored by the College's Department of Science and Mathematics and the Lois G. Britt Agribusiness Center, is free and the public is invited to attend.
Dr. Thomas A. Kunkel received his Ph.D. in 1977 from the University of Cincinnati. Following postdoctoral studies he joined the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in 1982. He is currently director of the Environmental Biology Program at the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, the chief of the Laboratory of Structural Biology and the head of the DNA Replication Fidelity Group in the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics. His expertise includes mechanisms of mutagenesis and DNA replication, and repair enzymology.
The Martin Lecture was established at Mount Olive College in 1993 by Dr. E. Lee Glover of Everett, Pennsylvania, as an annual tribute to his former teacher, Lorelle Martin. Mrs. Martin served for 30 years as chair of the Department of Science and Mathematics at Mount Olive College before retiring in 1987.
A student at MOC in the late 1950s, Dr. Glover has always had a deep appreciation for Mrs. Martin for the encouragement and support she provided to him during his studies. It was in fact, Mrs. Martin that inspired Dr. Glover to pursue his interest in the biological science field and to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. In 2006, Dr. Glover endowed the Martin Lecture to ensure continued support of the program and to perpetuate the Martin legacy.
