Freeman to Speak at MOC Harrison Lecture
MOUNT OLIVE- Mount Olive College will hold the 19th Annual Vivian B. Harrison Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, March 10, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Rodgers Chapel. The guest speaker will be Dr. Curtis W. Freeman. The theme for this year’s event is “And Your Daughters Shall Prophecy: Women’s Voices in the Church.”
Freeman is a research professor of Theology at Duke Divinity School where he is also the director of the Baptist House of Studies. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Baylor University. He earned his Master of Divinity from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 1987 to 2001, Freeman was Professor of Christianity at Houston Baptist University. He has previously served as pastor at several churches and is active in the Baptist World Alliance, serving on the Doctrine and InterChurch Cooperation Commission. He is also a participant in the current five year round of Catholic-Baptist conversations between the BWA and the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
Freeman recently authored chapters entitled “To Feed Upon By Faith” and “Can the Secular Be Sanctified?” in a book on Baptist Sacramentalism in The Future of Baptist Higher Education. His article “God in Three Persons: Baptist Unitarianism and the Trinity” appeared in the fall 2006 issue of Perspectives in Religious Studies.
Freeman and his wife, Debra, currently reside in Durham with their newly adopted son, Curtis Richmond “Rich” Freeman. They also have an adult son, Cole, and an adult daughter, Lauren.
The Vivian B. Harrison Lecture was established by the Reverend Frank R. Harrison in memory of his late wife. The purpose of the lecture is to provide a medium for continuing education for the ministers and laypersons of North Carolina.
Mrs. Harrison was a graduate of Mount Olive College and Barton College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education. She taught public school in North Carolina for 17 years before retiring in 1986 due to illness.
The lecture is free and the public is invited to attend. A buffet lunch will be available in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center for $5.
