Holiday Arts & Music
Wayne Community College will contribute to the season’s cheer with an Arts Festival and Holiday Music Concert, on Thursday, December 6.
The celebration of art and music will kick off in the Wayne Learning Center on the college’s main campus in Goldsboro at 5 p.m. The Atrium will be filled with the sounds of the season supplied by students and staff, and art produced by Continuing Education and college credit classes.
Paintings, photography, stained glass, jewelry, flower arrangements, fashions and purses are among the pieces that will be on display from the Continuing Education Division. Works produced in the curriculum design and drawing courses will be shown, also. Information on the courses and schedules for the spring semester will be available.
The public is invited to browse and enjoy refreshments provided by the Student Government Association., settle into Moffatt Auditorium for a choral concert from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., then mingle among the art again after the concert. There is no charge for the event.
The concert will offer a mix of holiday songs, both familiar favorites and new takes on old standards. The chorus will do "Christmas Time Is Here," "Make Me a Channel of Your Peace (the Prayer of St.
Francis)," and "Alleluia." It will also perform two medleys: a "Christmas Classic Celebration," and a "Canon of the Bells."
Some instrumental pieces are scattered in as well, with piano major Caroline Franco performing "Air on Greensleeves" and a special arrangement of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by WCC music program director Steele Sasser, performed by trumpet major Josh Artis with Sasser on piano.
Siblings take the spotlight twice. Brother and sister Andrew and Katie Harper will play "O Holy Night" on piano and flute, respectively.
Sisters Alison and Elizabeth Rawleigh will perform a version of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" that they arranged. Alison supplies the alto vocals, Elizabeth sings soprano and plays guitar, and accompanist Tom Casey adds piano.
"Baby, It’s Cold Outside" will be performed as a duet by students William Sander and Karrie Johnson.
The concert will be one of the best the college’s students have put on, according to Sasser.
"The chorus is not big, but the quality is definitely there and they are very dedicated. We have some phenomenal rehearsals that lift my spirits," said Sasser.
