STRATEGIC BUSINESS PLANNING, 'The Best Surprise Is No Surprise"
STRATEGIC BUSINESS PLANNING
"The Best Surprise Is No Surprise."
"Strategic business planners are optimists," says Curt Roney, a management professor at Mount Olive College's Tillman School of Business. "Planners believe that they can influence business outcomes for the best by increasing opportunities for competitive and financial success while maintaining risks at an acceptable level." Before his academic career, Curt was a planning executive for three NYSE corporations and managing principal of a strategy consulting firm in Ohio.
Professional business planners exist in all industries, according to Roney. Although they are more numerous in large, complex corporations, they also are found even in smaller and mid-size companies. That is partly because institutions like the Tillman School of Business now offer training in strategic management and other business planning skills such as project management. In smaller, closely held companies, the owner or chief executive may be the "chief planning officer," as well. "But, today, with modern methods and user-friendly computing systems, there is no reason why any business, regardless of size, should be unable to plan for its future," says Roney.
On Wednesday morning, Prof. Roney will provide Chamber members with a fast-paced review of modern business planning methods. Topics will include the concept of mission; how to gather evidence for use in planning decisions; how to select goals, strategic objectives and strategies; strategy implementation; and contingency planning. So, this briefing will be "strictly business."
