MOUNT OLIVE- Kathy Sullivan will be the guest speaker at the 11th Annual Braswell Lecture at Mount Olive College. The event will be held on Thursday, March 12 at 7:00 PM in Southern Bank Auditorium located in W. Burkette and Rose M. Raper Hall. The title of Dr. Sullivan’s presentation will be “Transforming the Profession: Teaching in the 21st Century.” The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Kathy Sullivan is senior policy advisor for 21st Century Professionals, reporting to the deputy superintendent of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and working with the State Board of Education. Prior to this new position, Sullivan was director of Human Resource Management for NCDPI. As such, she was responsible for overseeing the programs and services related to the recruitment, preparation, licensure, retention and evaluation of quality professionals for the public schools of North Carolina. Dr. Sullivan has also been a full-time professor at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke where she served as dean of Graduate Studies and director of Teacher Education.
Sullivan holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate from the University of Georgia.
Sponsored by the Teacher Education Committee and the Prospective Teacher’s Association at MOC, the Braswell Lecture has been held annually at Mount Olive College since 1997-98 in memory of Jessie Dail Braswell. Braswell taught in Princeton public schools for 34 years and demonstrated a life-long commitment to education. The Jessie Dail and Walter Vernon Braswell Endowment funds the Braswell Scholarship program, which has the potential of providing annual scholarships valued at $6,500 each. Since 1998 the Braswell Lecture has featured North Carolina leaders in education and presented addresses on significant issues.
